This aspect of Strehlow’s writing, the taming and framing of the Aranda material, also extended to his treatment of some myths. Oh, the savageries were still there in some of the ceremonial detail that accompanies the songs, but the emphasis is no longer upon the primal horde and its deeds. Nowhere was this more apparent than in Strehlow’s treatment of the myth that was his own Dreaming: the story of the two boys of Hermannsburg, the twins of Ntaria.

His own story took him right back to the Manangananga cave, the name of which meant two children. His father had translated ratapa, spirit boys. They were also ‘the two boys who always remained children.’60 Pastor Strehlow judged that the term ratapa probably came from ratama—‘to emerge, exit or originate from, stem from.’61 The first translation went:
